General:
Brokenwing, T-storm and Geoferret live in Fort Worth, Texas. T-storm
and Geoferret were both born here (even in the same hospital), and
Brokenwing is transplanted military who spent many years on the
California coast. Brokenwing and T-storm met during reputed attempts
to educate themselves at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
They spent their last $25 cash in the world to purchase a marriage
license, which the state of Arkansas allowed them to promptly take
downstairs to a JP and turn in to the real deal. Broke and unable
to make a living in the NW Arkansas economy they moved back to T-storm's
old stomping grounds in Texas. Somehow, both built successful careers
in the information technology field, became complete computer geeks,
and finally did something worthwhile in 1999 by blessing the world
with the advent of Geoferret. She is the light of their lives and
gets a thrill out of "treasure hunting" with mom and dad, having
been known to wake from a Friday afternoon nap and insistently say,
"Daddy, go TREASURE HUNT!" In addition to providing the family quality
time and entertainment together, Geocaching is offering the adults
some much needed exercise and time away from the homestead, plus
it helps the family explore the world around them.
Brokenwing:
Brokenwing tried out both sides of the continent before settling
somewhere in the middle with T-storm. Born in rural Georgia, Brokenwing
then lived on the beaches of Hawaii and California. He misses the
beach, but has no interest in returning to California, despite the
Texas heat. After working several years as a consultant in the network
engineering field, he currently works as Director of Information
Technology for a regional, university affiliated cancer treatment
center. This activity distracts from geocaching time, but does buy
the family a roof over their heads, food for the table, and a steady
supply of toys and gadgets suitable for placing in caches. His other
interests include web design, the sometime brewing of beer, computers
and other gadgetry, and playing with a certain super-toddler (complete
with towel cape). Brokenwing is convinced that Geoferret is the
perfect child.
T-storm:
T-storm has lived most of her life in Dallas/Fort Worth. In a previous
incarnation, she made a living as a computer hardware manager for
the data center of a Fortune 500 retailer. She now is a fulltime
household engineer and proud mom to Geoferret, an active toddler.
T-storm's non-geocaching interests include MOMS Club activities,
including produce cooperative, newsletter production and internet
mailing list administration, ferrets, including webmaster functions
for the local ferret enthusiast club, cooking, travel (when the
opportunity presents), and the rare pleasures of reading and painting
porcelain. T-storm not so secretly believes her child is a genius
and highly photogenic.
Geoferret:
Finding herself in the care of doting parents, and the only grandchild
on both sides of the family, Geoferret fills her time entertaining
others and directing family activities, such as geocaching. She
regularly requests to go "treasure hunting", where her favorite
finds include a playground with slides that are easily toddler accessible
and coins for her bank. Daddy, "outside", friends, and ferrets are
favored playthings. She loves to talk and she loves people. Her
friendly disposition and large vocabulary quickly take her beyond
just being a "cutie" with everyone she meets!
Signature Item:
When Brokenwing, T-storm, and little Geoferret started hunting caches
we selected a special item that was meaningful to us to leave behind
in each found cache as a sort of "we were here." It seemed most
appropriate to select
something related to our somewhat unique pets, ferrets. We've owned
pet ferrets for over 8 years now and our little girl adores them
(and they seem to like her too!). The best quality item we found
for a reasonable price was a cloisonne-style enameled pin in the
shape of a ferret sitting up on its haunches. We chose the white
version of this pin to place only in caches we find. For caches
we place, we add a few of the color verions of the pin (browns or
black) as tokens for the earlier finders. The division between pins
in found and hidden caches actually developed once we realized that
our little pins were starting to catch on as a "collector item"
with local geocachers… a ferret pin became a prized find! So we
thought that pins from our own caches should be unique from those
we leave in found caches to show that the finder actually located
a cache planted by Brokenwing, T-storm, and Geoferret! It's been
fun to track how the pins have been collected, and now some are
even starting to "travel"! One of our pins is now at 69
North in Norway, and another is reputed to be somewhere in the
Austin Texas area.
